Doraemon

Yep, you heard it right! I am going to write about DORAEMON! ^^ hahhahaa..

Doraemon is a cute robot cat created by two Japanese cartoonists (mangaka) Fujimoto Hiroshi and Motoo Akido with the duo’s penname Fujiko F. Fujio on 1st December 1969.

A little summary about Doraemon:
The story began when Nobi Nobita was visited by a strange being that climbed out of his study desk. The strange being ate Nobita’s snack then climbed back inside the desk.

Later, the being turns out to be called as Doraemon, a robot cat sent back from 22nd century by Nobita’s great-great grandson to improve his descendant’s future.

Not only that Doraemon is a robot cat from the future, he also has a fourth-dimensional pocket on his tummy where he can take out many useful tools from the future. Even though he is a robot cat, he doesn’t have ears since they were bitten by rats (thus impacting in a phobia of the creature). Doraemon later stay in Nobita’s house and become a part of Nobita’s life. Nobita’s parents even think of him like their second child.

Why writing about Doraemon?
Well, I’ve been watching Doraemon since i was in kindergarten! I even remember waking up every Sunday morning diligently just to catch a new episode of the cartoon ^^

Recently, when i was browsing about some stuff for my college paper i stumbled upon this blog where the writer give out one of the many rumoured ending of Doraemon series. I was very shocked with the ending and of course feel touched about it even if it’s not really the official ending.

Doraemon is a part of my childhood as with many other people in the world. I of course still love it until now! Who can resist that cute blue robot cat? Ok, Hello Kitty is cute but it can’t talk and as quoted from Time magazine, it probably has no whatever existence other than to be cute. Not that i don’t like Hello Kitty, i love it but it can’t be compared with Doraemon. Doraemon is like magic! He bring hopes and dreams and of course imagination to my childhood! :) I remember watching the cartoon, reading the comic books.. ah.. How can i ever forget about this beautiful memory ;)

I even still bring my Doraemon fan around in my bag when the weather is hot! ^_^” So cute.. hahaha.. my precious possesion la.. hahaa.. ^^

Ending that moved me:
Since the 1980’s, there are many fictional ending to the Doraemon series… Here are some of them (taken completely from Doraemon wikipedia page):

  • The first and the more optimistic ending was made public by Nobuo Sato several years ago. Doraemon’s battery power ran out, and Nobita was given a choice between replacing the battery inside a frozen Doraemon, which would cause it to reset and lose all memory, or await a competent robotics technician who would be able to resurrect the cat-robot one day. Nobita swore that very day to work hard in school, graduate with honours, and become that robotics technician. He successfully resurrected Doraemon in the future as a robotics professor, became successful as an AI developer, and thus lived happily ever after, thus relieving his progeny of the financial burdens that caused Doraemon to be sent to his space-time in the first place. A dōjin manga for this ending was made by a “Tajima T Yasue” in 2005, and it sold 13,000 copies before Shogakukan halted its publication. Tajima apologized to Shogakukan in 2007 and paid an undisclosed amount of money for settlement.[6].
  • The second, more pessimistic ending suggests that Nobita Nobi is suffering from autism and that all the characters (including Doraemon) are simply his delusion. The idea that Nobita was a sick and dying little boy who imagined the entire series on his sickbed to help him ease his pain and depression no doubt angered quite a lot of fans. Many Japanese fans staged a protest outside the headquarters of the publisher of the series after learning about this suggestion. The publisher had to issue a public statement that this is not true. (This ending actually correlates to the ending for the series St. Elsewhere, which ended in 1988.)
  • The third ending suggests that Nobita fell and hit his head on a rock. He fell into a deep coma, and eventually into a semi-vegetative state. To raise money for an operation to save Nobita, Doraemon sold all the tools and devices in his four-dimensional pocket. However, the operation failed. Doraemon sold all his tools except for one used as a last resort. He used it to enable Nobita to go wherever he wanted, whichever time or era he wished to go. In the end, the very place Nobita wanted to go was heaven.

But not to think about that, the ending for Doraemon that i read about and moved me to tears is this.. (It is in Indonesian, if you don’t understand and wanna read the writing in English just scroll down until bellow the comic.. i’ll post it there).

English transcript for the ending:

One day, a very normal day, Nobita came back from school and went upstairs of his house. Doraemon was there sleeping, just like the other normal day.

“Hey, Doraemon, please wake up, lets play! “, but Doraemon does not wake up.

Nobita thought that Doraemon is tired, so he went out to play with Shizuka-chan and other folks. After few hours, he returned to his home, but Doraemon was still sleeping. Nobita felt something strange, and tried to wake him up. But there was no reply. He became to feel afraid, and tried to wake him up. But whatever he does, Doraemon did not wake up. Nobita exactly knew that something was different.

This never happened before. He began crying, but though he screamed or cried, the famous fat-cat-robot did not make a single move at all. He came up to one idea, and jumped into his desk-the time machine-and went to the future to meet Dorami-chan, Doraemon’s sister. He begged her for help, and forced her to go with him back to 1998.

After a short trip again back to 1998 by the time machine, Dorami-chan looked all over his brother Doraemon to see what was wrong with him. After few minutes, she said “the battery is out”

Nobita was relieved, and said, “Battery? So he is not broken right? Please replace or recharge his battery, and put him back like before.”

But Dorami-chan shook her head and said,”Nobita-san, should I really do that?”

Nobita said, “What? What do you mean?”

Dorami-chan replied, “His main battery is here, close to his pocket. And it ran out. But originally, he had a back-up battery in his ears, but as you know, his ears were eaten by a rat very many years ago, so he does not have a back-up battery now.”

“So what do you mean?”

“I mean, if I replace his battery, every memory of you will be eternally lost from his brain program.”

“WHAT?????”

“Shall I do that?”

Nobita closed his eyes. He cried, but after few minutes, he stopped crying, and quietly told Dorami-chan, “Dorami-chan, thanks for coming here. I will take care of the rest. You have to go back to your future time now.”

Dorami-chan could not decide what to do, but anyway she hugged Nobita quietly, and she went back home. After he went back, Nobita carried Doraemon and placed him into the shelf.

TIME FLIES……….

Year 2010, Nobita grew up. Since that day, he changed. He studied hard, did not cry anymore, and he lived without Doraemon. He told Shizuka and other folks that Doraemon had to go back to his future, and could not meet him anymore.

Shizuka was impressed to Nobita’s mysterious appearance which became completely different from 10 years ago. They fell in love, and married. Nobita became a scientist. He made a laboratory in his room, and was studying hard with his job all day. He told Shizuka not to come into the room, as it is very dangerous inside.

But one day, he called Shizuka and told her to come in to his room. It was the first time for her to enter his husband’s room. The moment she went in, she lost her words… There was her friend, Doraemon, who she used to play in her childhood days. Doraemon was not moving. It seemed as he was sleeping.

“Look, Shizuka, I will plug in from now.” Nobita turned on the main switch on Doraemon. Doraemon quietly, very quietly, started to open his eyes.

It was the moment the inventor of Doraemon became clear. It was Nobita. He studied hard and hard just to meet and talk with his old friend again. Going back and forth of time, Nobita was the one who made Doraemon. He discovered all the programs and architecture of Doraemon-type-robot.

Nobita and Shizuka was crying gently.

Doraemon opened his eyes. He looked around, and finally said, “Nobita-kun, did you finish your homework?”

There was the same white clouds in the sky like the times they used to spend together…

*ends*

Conclusion of the endings:
Even though many people believe in this ending it’s clear that when the Fujiko Fujio duo broke up in 1987, the very idea of an official ending to the series was never discussed. Since Fujiko F. died in 1996 before any decisions were reached, any “endings” of Doraemon are fan fiction. It’s concluded that there is no ending to Doraemon.

I’ve been following HSM series since its first release in 2006. It’s absolutely brilliant and fun musical movies (except the second one, i dun quite like it).

Sypnosis:
High School Musical 3: Senior Year continues the ongoing tune-filled love story between basketball player Troy Bolton and brainy beauty Gabriella Montez. As they head toward high-school graduation, the couple realizes that they’ll be separated when they head to different colleges in the fall, so they join with their friends to produce a spring musical that will help them express their hopes and fears about the future.

My thoughts:
Ok, this movie is GOOD! It’s sweet and your typical good-feeling movie. I love all the songs and the dances. I was especially very impressed with Zac Efron during “scream“. It’s marvelous, brilliant, and absolutely fantastic.  Yeah, actually the whole musicale is fantastic! There wasn’t a single moment of boredom for me. Just simply terrific piece of work. I really enjoyed it. Haha.. can’t believe i finally find a musical movie that i truly like ^^ Lallala.. :D

I RATE THIS MOVIE: ***** (5/5 STARS)

I’m going to watch this movie for the second time Tomorrow. (Yes! It’s that good!) But before that, i am going to review it first ^^
This movie is made by Indonesian director, Riri Riza and produced by Mira Lesmana. It’s an adaptation of an Indonesian best selling novel with the same title.

Why review this movie?
I want to review this movie because.. Well.. yeah, I always review good stuff right ^^ hehehehe.. Not only it is beautifully made, this movie is good because there are moral lessons etched in the movies about how you must not give up and there are a lot more poorer people other than us. It also shows how beautiful Indonesia island is. And of course, it shows the truth of Indonesian education system in the country side (villages etc) nowadays.

My review:
As usual, SPOILERS! Stop reading if you don’t want to get spoiled!

It is about a school in the island of Belitung. The school will be shuted down if it was not able to collect 10 students for the new academic semester. At first, there were only 9 kids who came. But at last, after almost giving up the other kid come to save the day. The total 10 kids finally can have an education in a school. They will then start a friendship together and being named The Rainbow Army (Laskar Pelangi) by their only female teacher Ms.Muslimah.

The school is in a terrible situation. It got holes on the classroom wall, the roof is leaking. Totally similar to the one you can see in real life village schools in Indonesia.

Wee are shown that the school is very poor. All the students are from poor family (but they want to give better life to their kids so they sent them to have an education even though it’s not in a good school).

The kids all are good students, they want to study and very diligent. Also they are taught religion classes so they have moral knowledge. Though there are only 2 teachers (3 including the headmaster, the other teacher Mr. Bakri even quit and work in other school later in the movie).

In one of the scene the headmaster say to his friend, “I protected this school from closing down because there isn’t much more school like this. In this school the most important subject is morality. Morality.” (i translate this quote myself.. so sorry if there is any mistranslation.. hehee..)

Wah… so touching lah the movie ^^

In the movie 5 or more kids got their own special characteristic that is the soul of the characters. But these three characters are really noticeable:

Mahar - This one like to listen to music from the radio. Once he even sang Roma Irama (Indonesia’s King of Dangdut) Bunga Kejora song to his friends. He is also very creative and artistic.. hahahhaa! Verrys has done a good acting to potray this character.

Lintang - This one, very smart! He can calculate mathematical questions without using calculator or calculate it on the paper. Because of that he was accused of cheating at the student competition, but thank god he can do the formula on the board for the board of jury. But too bad in the end he cannot continue his education. His father who was a fisherman, died in the see thus as the oldest son he should take care of his little siblings. The actor done a very good acting too!

Ikal - This one.. ehhee.. he fall in love to a Chinese born Indonesian girl… Very funny ^^ cause he looks so cute! Hahaha.. But the girl has to go to Java to help her family. But before she leaves she gave him a box with the picture of Eiffel Tower. And at the end of the movie, the already grown up Ikal went back to the hometown and get to meet the already grown up Lintang. He told him that he won the scholarship to study in Paris (presumably motivated by the picture on the box) ^^ Also good acting by Zulfanny.

Overall, this movie is really good.. It’s unlike many other Indonesian movies that has no real creativity and unoriginal.. (Most of them are all about ghost, ghost and ghost (-_-”) and once movie like Quickie Express succeed in Indonesia Box Office, they all make many movies with the same theme over and over again… who watch that kind of movie making?!)

So, yeah.. I really appreciate Indonesian movie maker who dares to be different and original. It means they are serious about the actual movie than just thinking about what sells and what not. I always confused about this, from what I know good movies always do better in box office and always more famous. For example: Ada Apa Dengan Cinta, Arisan, Denias: Senandung di atas Awan, Quickie Express… And now this! They are all more outstanding ^^
They always do better and really recognized! So what’s the point of flooding the Indonesian cinema with movies like Jelangkung sequels?? And Pocong! sequels?? OMG… The first one was quite good already; they should have stopped making several sequels that’s not up to the standard of the first movie. Unless of course they can make it fresh and good like the movie Nagabonar 2: Nagabonar (jadi) 2. It’s sometimes funny that there are still people who even think about watching them! :D Maybe they like the suspense or the scare? -_-” *cough*

Anyway, this is getting off the topic :P hehe..

Erh, yeah! Laskar Pelangi is a movie that every Indonesian should watch ^^
It’s good, it’s educating. It’s totally watchable and not boring! Just simply brilliant!

All the veteran actors like Ikranegara and Slamet Rahardjo, and actors like Tora Sudiro and Cut Mini! Also the 12 child actors! All had done a good job in potraying their characters!!! Four Thumbs up!
If you can, watch his movie!

I’ll even buy this movie when the DVD comes out ^^ just for collection and to show it to everybody especially my future children (ehhehee..) and my little brother and sister.

I RATE THIS MOVIE: **** (4/5 STARS)

The Reason:
Everything is good, only that in the movie there’s a moment there when the kids go to visit whoever.. I forget the name. The person is a dukun or something.. I don’t think they should put it in the movie.. It’s so strange that I feel a little “hah” moment.. Besides, it’s not even mentioned again later in the movie… hehehe..
